The Chronicles of St. Olaf: A Journey to the Grand Lodge and the Mystical Chapel
On the 21st day of June in the year 2024, beneath a brightening sky that heralded the height of spring, the brethren of Lodge St. Olaf assembled for a quest of both enlightenment and camaraderie. Their destination lay far to the south—the grand halls of the Grand Lodge of Scotland in Edinburgh, and the fabled Rosslyn Chapel, shrouded in legend and mystery.
Thus, the Fellowship set forth: Pictured above left to right, Andy Crawley, master of wit and good cheer; Geoff Spence our guide at Rosslyn Chapel; Gordon Daly, Day-Late the Dwarf , who was scooped up in Aberdeen, running late as usual, but brimming with enthusiasm; Trevor the Worshipful, stout-hearted leader of the band; Bill Murray, steadfast and true; Jim Connor, affectionately known as Jaycee, whose tales were as endless as the wine he favoured; and last but not least, Andy Phipps, the ever-affable Phippsy.
Day One: The Splendor of the Grand Lodge
Departing the Lodge Rooms in Serald Lane as the clock struck ten, the brethren journeyed southward, the carriages filled with jest and fellowship. Arriving in Edinburgh, they gazed upon the newly refurbished halls of the Grand Lodge of Scotland, resplendent in its majesty. Guided through its corridors, they marveled at the rich history and the ornate craftsmanship – a testament to the enduring legacy of Freemasonry.
Evening descended, and with it came a feast befitting kings. Around a great table, the brethren dined, their goblets filled with ale and wine, laughter ringing like the chiming of silver bells. Tales were shared, toasts raised, and bonds of friendship further strengthened.
Day Two: The Mystical Chapel
The morning brought the second leg of their journey, one steeped in mystery and lore. Rosslyn Chapel, its arches and carvings alive with secrets whispered through the ages, awaited their arrival. The Fellowship was met by the learned Geoff Spence, Past Master of Lodge 606, whose insights unraveled the Chapel’s enigmatic symbolism.
From the Apprentice Pillar to the green men hidden in stone, every detail spoke to the intertwining of art, history, and Masonic tradition. Geoff’s masterful tour enthralled the brethren, leaving them awed and inspired.
Their hearts full, they journeyed onwards to Perth, where another evening of mirth and merriment awaited. Around yet another table, the brethren supped and sipped, their conversation flowing like the River Tay itself.
Day Three: The Return Home
On the third day, the Fellowship turned their steeds northward, weary but content. The journey home was marked by reflection on the treasures they had witnessed and the camaraderie they had shared. Though the road was long, the bonds of brotherhood had grown stronger with each passing mile.
A Tale to Remember
The sabbatical had been a triumph: from the regal halls of the Grand Lodge to the mystical aura of Rosslyn Chapel, every moment had been steeped in history, learning, and laughter. Trevor the Worshipful, Jaycee, Day-Late the Dwarf, Phippsy, Crawley, and Bill Murray returned to St. Olaf with tales to tell and memories to cherish.
And so, the Fellowship’s journey passed into the annals of the Lodge, a shining chapter in the saga of their enduring brotherhood.
Until the next quest beckons…
