In 2007, the Lodge Sabbatical journey took the brethren north to the picturesque village of Portmahomack in Ross-shire, a peaceful coastal community on the shores of the Dornoch Firth. The destination held special significance for Craig Wightman, whose family roots were firmly planted in the village. Craig’s parents still resided there at the time and warmly welcomed the visiting party, opening both their home and their hearts to the group. Their kindness and hospitality helped make the weekend especially memorable for everyone involved.
The trip itself reflected the different personalities and interests within the Lodge. Bill and Gordon, keen motorcycling enthusiasts, chose to make the journey on two wheels, embracing the open roads and Highland scenery along the way. The remainder of the group travelled more conventionally by car, enjoying the gradual transition from the familiar landscapes of home to the rugged beauty of the north Highlands.
Saturday offered an opportunity for exploration and reminiscence. Bill and Gordon spent the day touring the surrounding area by motorcycle, revisiting places that held fond memories from years gone by. One of the highlights of their excursion was a visit to the lodgings where Bill had once stayed while working in the area, bringing back stories and memories from an earlier chapter of his life. Their travels also took them through Tain, where Gordon took the opportunity to visit his aunt and uncle, adding a personal and family touch to the day’s adventures.
Meanwhile, the rest of the group set out on foot to enjoy the peaceful countryside surrounding Portmahomack. The village and its surrounding landscape offered stunning views, quiet country paths, and the unmistakable charm of the Scottish Highlands. The walk allowed everyone to relax, enjoy the fresh sea air, and appreciate the natural beauty of Ross-shire at a gentler pace.
As evening approached, the entire group gathered once more at the hotel. Over good food, refreshments, and the warmth of Highland hospitality, stories from the day were exchanged with much laughter and camaraderie. Tales of motorcycle adventures, family connections, scenic walks, and shared experiences ensured the evening was filled with good humour and fellowship.
The 2007 Sabbatical to Portmahomack remains a fondly remembered occasion in the Lodge calendar — a journey that combined friendship, heritage, travel, and the unique spirit of togetherness that such trips always inspire.
