A Man Called Horace

Over the years, Lodge St. Olaf has been fortunate to count several talented entertainers among its members. In the early 1990s, Lodge members Jim Gardiner and Gordon Mackay performed as a novelty band called “A Man Called Horace.” Their musical exploits became the inspiration for one of the Lodge’s most memorable Ythan Raft Race entries, combining their flair for performance with their knack for creative design.
That year, the crew embraced a country and western theme, dressing in full cowboy regalia—Stetsons, boots, and plaid shirts. The raft was transformed into a replica of the iconic “Grand Ole Opry” stage, complete with intricate detailing and rustic charm. True to their theme, Jim and Gordon took center stage on the raft, treating the assembled crowd to a live performance of country hits as the raft prepared to set off. The impromptu concert delighted spectators, adding an extra layer of entertainment to an already festive day.
The creativity and energy behind this entry earned the Lodge well-deserved recognition, culminating in their winning the coveted prize for the “Most Attractive Raft.” This success not only showcased their artistic and musical talents but also solidified their reputation for bringing fun and originality to the Ythan Raft Race.
