Noah’s Ark
In 1989, Lodge St. Olaf once again showcased their flair for creativity and community spirit with their entry in the Ythan Raft Race: a striking representation of Noah’s Ark. True to the biblical tale, the raft was an ambitious construction, featuring intricate details that brought the story to life. Complete with a multi-tiered design and animal figures, the Ark was both a visual masterpiece and a playful nod to the enduring legend.
What made this year particularly memorable, however, was the Lodge’s pre-race effort to engage with the community. In the days leading up to the event, the crew took part in a door-to-door collection around Cruden Bay. Dressed in their Noah’s Ark-themed costumes, the crew brought energy and humor to the village as they rallied support and donations for the race and its associated causes. The sight of crew members knocking on doors, accompanied by a flurry of excitement, showcased the Lodge’s commitment to giving back and involving the community in their endeavors.
On race day, the Ark was a crowd favorite. Its vibrant design and thematic execution captured the imagination of spectators, while its presence on the river was nothing short of spectacular. This entry solidified Lodge St. Olaf’s standing as pioneers of creativity and community connection in the race’s history.
