RWM. Ewan Robertson’s Mission

Refurbishment of the Lodge Rooms under Bro. Ewan Robertson

In December 2004, Bro. Ewan Robertson was installed into the Chair of King Solomon as Right Worshipful Master of Lodge St. Olaf No. 1188. His installation marked the beginning of a particularly active and ambitious period in the history of the Lodge, with one of his principal aims being the complete refurbishment of the Lodge Rooms.

At that time, it had been almost twenty years since the interior had last undergone any significant decoration or improvement, and it was clear that far more than a simple repainting was required. Bro. Robertson approached the task with determination and a clear vision for restoring the Lodge Rooms so that they once again reflected the pride, tradition, and character of the Lodge.

During the first closed season of his term in office, extensive renovation works began almost immediately. In what many considered a radical approach, much of the interior was stripped back within the first few days of the summer recess. This meant there was no option but to complete the works before the Lodge reopened on the first Thursday in October for the new season.

The scale of the project required a tremendous effort from the Brethren of the Lodge, many of whom gave up countless hours throughout the summer months to ensure the work was completed on time. Much of the refurbishment was carried out by Lodge members themselves, demonstrating the strong spirit of cooperation and dedication within the Lodge. Specialist external tradesmen were brought in where required, particularly for plastering and the rewiring of the electrical system.

As the work progressed through the summer, the Lodge Rooms underwent a substantial transformation. Improvements included the installation of new seating, half-panelled walls, upgraded electrics, and a striking stained-glass window bearing the Lodge emblem on the West wall. Designed and created by Bro. Gordon Mackay P.M., the stained-glass window quickly became one of the most distinctive and admired features of the temple.

Although created during earlier periods of improvement, other notable features of the Lodge continued to complement the refurbished interior. These included the exterior gates fabricated by Bro. Graeme Sutherland and the painting of King Solomon on the East wall, painted by Bro. Jim Taylor P.M. Both remain important elements of the Lodge Rooms and continue to be admired by members and visitors alike.

Thanks to the commitment, skill, and teamwork of the Brethren, the refurbishment project was completed on schedule, allowing the Lodge to reopen as planned in October. The success of the undertaking left a lasting legacy for Lodge St. Olaf No. 1188, with the improvements continuing to benefit and impress members and visitors to this day.

Bro. Robertson’s year in the Chair is remembered not only for the remarkable transformation of the Lodge Rooms, but also for the spirit of unity, hard work, and shared purpose that made such an ambitious project possible.
