The St. Olaf Jewel: A Legacy of Distinction and Devotion

In the grand halls of Lodge St. Olaf 1188, where history intertwines with tradition, there exists a treasure of unparalleled significance: the St. Olaf Distinguished Service Jewel. Commissioned in the year 1992, this emblem of honor stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication of the brethren who have shaped the Lodge’s legacy.

The Creation of the Jewel

Crafted with meticulous care, only five of these jewels were ever produced. From the outset, it was decreed that these jewels would be bestowed only upon brethren whose service to the Lodge reached extraordinary heights. To be named among the recipients was to join the ranks of those whose loyalty and contributions would echo through the ages.

In keeping with the sacred nature of this honor, the Lodge decreed that each recipient would hold the Jewel for life, its light a constant reminder of their achievements. Upon their passing to the Grand Lodge Above, the Jewel would return to the brethren, to be conferred anew upon another worthy soul.

A Symbol of Continuity

The passage of the Jewels from one brother to another is a poignant reminder of the enduring nature of the Lodge’s spirit. Each Jewel carries not only its original recipient’s legacy but also the stories of the brethren who have borne it since. Among these, Jewel No. 5, returned by Bro. J. Gardiner P.M. upon his departure from the area, later found its way into the hands of Bro. Jim Connor P.M., a man whose steadfast service exemplifies the virtues the Jewel represents.

The Guardians of the Jewels

Each Jewel is a beacon of the Lodge’s storied history, handed down through generations:

  • Jewel No. 1
Initially presented to Bro. Fred Warrander, Past Master (1962–1966), it passed upon his entry to the Grand Lodge Above to Bro. Gordon Mackay, Past Master (1994–1996, 2013–2015), his protégé and kindred spirit in service.
  • Jewel No. 2
Awarded to Bro. Jim Stewart, Past Master (1975–1977), later adorned Bro. Doug Sheal, whose steadfast commitment to serving as Treasurer to the Lodge for 30+ years, which more recently saw him gain Honorary Grand Rank has left an indelible mark.
  • Jewel No. 3
Once the pride of Bro. Ken Davidson, Past Master (1986–1988), this Jewel found a worthy custodian in Bro. Mark Dunn, Past Master (2002–2004), who carries forward Ken’s legacy with dignity.
  • Jewel No. 4
Entrusted to Bro. Jock Warrander, it now rests with Bro. Derek Clark, Past Master (1992–1994), a steward of tradition and excellence.
  • Jewel No. 5
Originally bestowed upon Bro. Jim Gardiner, Past Master (1988–1990), it now gleams proudly upon Bro. Jim Connor, Past Master (1998–2000), a pillar of the Lodge’s present and future.

A Living Legacy

The St. Olaf Jewels are more than mere adornments; they are living symbols of service, unity, and the enduring bonds of fraternity. Each Jewel carries with it the stories of its bearers—of their struggles, triumphs, and unwavering commitment to the Lodge. To receive such a Jewel is not only an honor but also a solemn duty to uphold the values it represents.

The Eternal Light of St. Olaf

As the brethren of Lodge St. Olaf continue their journey through the years, the Distinguished Service Jewels remain steadfast, their light guiding the way forward. For in their gleam lies the heart of the Lodge itself—a heart that beats in harmony with the values of brotherhood, service, and tradition.

Thus, the tale of the Jewels endures, ever bright, ever inspiring, a testament to the timeless spirit of Lodge St. Olaf 1188.
